The Joy of Being Left Alone With a Good Book

The Joy of Being Left Alone With a Good Book

The plan is beautiful in its lack of ambition. A book. Somewhere comfortable. A little time when nobody needs you to find something, answer something, or have a quick look at something that will absolutely take forty-five minutes.

You settle in. Find your place. Read a sentence twice because you like it.

There it is: the joy of being left alone with a good book.

For people who love reading, that can be an excellent afternoon. Add some California light, a little shade, and a drink within reach, and the calendar starts looking pleasantly full.

Bring a book you're excited to open

Pick the one that's been catching your eye. The paperback with the ridiculous premise. The novel a friend keeps talking about. The poetry collection you want to read slowly. Your favorite book, again, because you already know where the good parts live.

Your reading time belongs to you. A short story can fill it beautifully. So can three chapters of a romance or a few pages of an essay that makes you stop and think.

If you're between books, try searching WorldCat for a title or author you're curious about. It brings together library catalog records, giving you a starting point for tracking down your next read. Check the library's own catalog for current availability.

Find somewhere you want to stay

A good reading spot has a few very ordinary virtues: somewhere comfortable to sit, enough light to see the page, and a reasonable chance of staying put.

A couch can deliver all three. So can a favorite library chair. Outdoors, try a shaded bench or a patch of grass where you can get comfortable without constantly rescuing your belongings from the wind.

California gives the imagination plenty to work with: coastal air, redwood shade, a neighborhood park, a sunny patio. Match the setting to the afternoon you actually have. A nearby bench and half an hour can be a lovely arrangement.

For a bigger outing, use California State Parks' park finder to explore possibilities. Follow through to the park's own information before you head out, including access, facilities, and current conditions.

Prefer an indoor afternoon? The San Francisco Public Library's locations page gathers branch information and hours. Elsewhere, your local library's website is a good place to begin.

Make the first few minutes easy

Bring the small things that let you stay comfortable: your glasses, a bookmark, a drink, maybe a sweater. That last one is particularly welcome when the California afternoon has decided to become a California evening ahead of schedule.

Set your phone somewhere you won't reach for it automatically. If you're sharing space, a simple sentence can help: I'm going to read for a while. I'll catch up with you afterward.

Then open the book. Give yourself a few pages to find its pace. Sometimes the best part is the moment you realize you've stopped thinking about how long you've been sitting there.

Enjoy a little undivided attention

Reading has its own small pleasures. A conversation between characters that makes you grin. A description you can practically smell. The deeply satisfying moment when a writer finds the exact words for something you've felt.

Those moments deserve a little room. So does the occasional urge to put the book down, look at the trees, and think, Well, that was fucking good.

When you have company later, you might have a story to tell about what you've read. For now, you're allowed to stay with the page.

Keep a little room for the next chapter

A favorite reading spot is worth remembering. So is an author who made an ordinary afternoon feel different. Leave a bookmark in the book and a little space in your week to come back.

At So Many Fucks, we love that combination: a good book, a place you enjoy, and enough curiosity to keep turning pages. It's the feeling behind our literary goods for people who love reading.

The next chapter can wait until tomorrow. Or you can stay a little longer.

Just one more chapter. Abso-fucking-lutely.
